06 Sep Edible Playgrounds Update
Throughout the recent days of lockdown Holmleigh has been open for the children of some of our critical workers. They have enjoyed a varied curriculum including working in our recently opened Edible Playgrounds garden. Lots of preparation and planting has taken place, and several member of staff have been visiting regularly to tend and tidy, and of course to water the garden.
We have a really thriving selection of vegetables and fruits now ripening ready for our school kitchen to include in the school dinner menus.
Here is a list of what we are growing!
Tomatoes, peppers, chillies, peas, mange tout, spring onions, courgettes, cucumbers, squash, carrots, lettuce, parsley, dill, oregano, coriander, thyme, mint, rhubarb, raspberries, blackcurrants, apples, grapes, sunflowers! We are also growing a selection of wild flowers to complement our food growing.
With a fully equipped kitchen in our refurbished School House the prospects for children to cook produce straight from our school garden are really exciting.
This is a wonderful project that has added something really special to our school. Over the coming years we look forward to seeing our children become expert growers and accomplished cooks.
Thanks to Trees for Cities, Edible Playgrounds, and all the staff, parents and children who made this possible!
