Music
At Holmleigh school, we believe in the importance of music reaching every pupil. We believe that music is a universal language that can bring groups and individuals together in society and as such, our curriculum is designed to give all learners equal opportunity to access the skills, knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in the subject.
We want all our children from nursery through to year 6 to experience outstanding, high quality teaching that engages and inspires them to develop their love for music and their talent as musicians.
Our pupils are equipped to develop their music skills in different areas which help to promote autonomy, confidence, creativity, imagination in performance and a sense of achievement. These skills are developed through regular singing assemblies, class percussion lessons and regular performances.
Each child has an important part to play in whole school/class music. Children are taught that their input always makes a difference. The emphasis in class is on creative music with skills developed through catalysts such as poetry or given topics/themes The curriculum covers the three main elements of performing/composing/listening. Within those come the skills of singing/rhythm/memorising/responding
Aside from exploring the language of music through notation/rhythms skills, the pupils develop co-ordination with tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments with a professional approach towards techniques of playing and performing. This is a consistent part in all of the lessons. The school also hold regular singing assemblies in which various styles and genres are covered with pupils singing in unison or two/three parts singing. Good vocal technique is promoted with emphasis on breathing and vocal exercises before working on the material.
Performance plays a key role with a range of opportunities planned across the academic year both internally and externally to showcase the skills they have learnt and build their confidence. Performances take place in the form of school assemblies for parents and outside performances for example singing at the local supermarket, residential care homes, and in the Hackney Junior Singing Festival.
