Physical Education
At Holmleigh Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in the growth and development of young children. PE helps build leadership skills, confidence, teamwork, and fitness, becoming an integral part of their lives both inside and outside of school.
High-quality PE enables children to succeed in and enjoy a wide range of physical activities. It also supports their personal and social development, helping them to navigate competitive, creative, and challenging situations with resilience and confidence.
Our Aims for Physical Education
We are committed to providing the best opportunities for children to develop their physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment of physical activity. Our key aims are to:
- Encourage a healthy and active lifestyle: Promote lifelong habits of health and fitness.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities: Foster a love for competition and teamwork in a supportive environment.
- Enhance and widen each child’s sporting experience and enjoyment: Introduce children to a variety of activities, from traditional sports to creative physical challenges.
- Develop a targeted skill set: Help children refine specific skills to boost their confidence and capability.
- Reach their physical potential: Provide opportunities for children to thrive in diverse sports and physical environments.
Each year, we will be review our curriculum map to ensure that children are engaging in a variety of popular and alternative sports enabling them to develop the above skills.
Why PE Matters
Through participation in PE, children gain not only physical skills but also an understanding of how exercise benefits their bodies and minds. We aim to instil positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles, encouraging children to embrace physical activity as an enjoyable and essential part of their daily lives.
Children are provided with the opportunity to learn from experts in various fields, including fencing, rugby, and football.
Our commitment to delivering high-quality PE ensures that all children can grow into confident, capable individuals who appreciate the value of fitness, teamwork, and perseverance.
Extra-Curricular
We currently offer after-school sports clubs for both KS1 and KS2, aimed at encouraging children to enjoy physical activity and adopt healthy lifestyles. These clubs provide opportunities to participate in a variety of activities, including football, gymnastics, rugby, and dance.
Morning Exercise
Every morning, children in KS1 and KS2 begin their day with a 5-minute morning exercise. It’s a great way to energise and prepare for the day ahead!
Swimming
Every year group in KS2 participates in swimming lessons. During the spring term, children engage in an intensive two-week block of swimming lessons, designed to build their confidence and skills in the water.
Sports Days
Every summer term, we hold our annual sports day. Children arrive at school wearing their team T-shirts (PE kits) and participate in a variety of fun and competitive sports activities. Team points are awarded to children across EYFS, KS1, and KS2 not only for their performance in the games but also for demonstrating core values such as respect, kindness, determination, resilience, honesty, self-belief, and teamwork.
Bikeability Training
We offer free Bikeability Training at Levels 1 and 2 to our Year 5 and Year 6 students, typically taking place at the end of the first half term. This safe, structured, and standardised program is designed to equip children with the skills and confidence to become competent cyclists, preparing them for cycling on the road in the future.
